What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Medical Nutrition Therapy, often abbreviated as MNT, is an evidence-based medical approach to treating certain chronic conditions through the use of an individually-tailored nutrition plan. This therapy is guided by our Registered Dietitian (RD) who works closely with you to create a diet plan that meets your unique needs.

Who Can Benefit From MNT?

A wide range of people can benefit from MNT, including those who:

  • Have been diagnosed with diseases where diet plays a critical role, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or kidney disease.

  • Are at risk for certain conditions due to family history, lifestyle, or personal habits.

  • Need to manage their weight or tackle issues related to obesity.

  • Are preparing for or recovering from surgery.

  • Are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

  • Need help managing nutritional needs related to aging, allergies, or digestive disorders.

Every MNT session is different, because everyone’s nutritional needs are unique. However, you can generally expect the following from your MNT sessions:

  • Assessment: your medical history, lab work, lifestyle, eating habits, and nutrition goals

  • Nutrition Plan Development

  • Nutrition Education: such as nutritional content of foods, how to read food labels, proper portion sizes, meal planning and preparation, and more.

  • Follow-Up: The dietitian will monitor your progress, provide support, and make adjustments to your plan as needed.
